This quarter, the coalition is revisiting its mission of outreach with aggressive passion.

On Oahu, due to the addition of 94+ new members, we decided to divided the island into 5 regions: Leeward Coast, North Shore, Windward Coast, Central Oahu, & South. Each region will not only have a Regional-Specific chapter meeting but also Interest-Specific Chapters as well. Some examples include the following: Surfing Chapter, Music & Arts Chapter, Bible Study Chapter, and The Go-Get’ems (a chapter focusing on various physical activities & sports). Once-a-month each chapter will meet as usual, then once-a-quarter all chapters will come together for an All Regional Competition Activity. The first All-Regional Event is scheduled for November at Dave-n-Buster’s. Each region will compete against each other in basketball, skeeball, car racing, derby, some gun-gun game, spin-o-wheel, and more! The wining region gets a Regional-Uber-Fun-Shindig-Party of their creation!

HFYC Oahu Chapters: North Shore (COYSA) Chapter, Waianae Chapter, Kaneohe Chapter (Windward Mal), Alumni Chapter (HFYC Office), Pearlridge Chapter (Pearlridge Mall), Waikiki Chapter, LGBT Chapter, Bible Study Chapter, Surfing Chapter, Music & Arts Chapter, Bible Study Chapter, Interact Club (Chatholic Charities), Youth Leadership, and The Go-Get’ems.

This Fall break the Kaua’i Chapter was busy. On Monday, October 3, 2011, the HFYC- Kaua’i Chapter met and worked on creating a training for professional parents (foster parents).

October 4, 2011 the Youth did a community service project at Yumi’s Restaurant where they rotated and learned how to cook some things, prepare hamburgers & pie dough, washed dishes, waited tables, served food and advertised. They did a great job and had lots of fun.

They went miniature golfing on Wednesday October 5, 2011. They had a blast too. Then on October 6, 2011 the HFYC- Kauai chapter held a training for the professional parents. The topic they chose was “How can you help us prepare to be independent”. They created a power point presentation, presented training as well as shared their personal thoughts and feeling about aging out. In addition, the youth presented the most important things they need to learn before aging out and they also chose the top three things they wanted to work on now.

They did a great job!

-Kisha Aguiar, YOC

The coalition attended this years Ohana Is Forever V Conference with a clear mision: Recruit New Members & Plug Them Into A Chapter. Going forth with the moto of “Unity Thru Connecting” both HFYC Alumni & Youth helped sign-up almost 100 foster youth (out of 135 who attened the conference) for the coalition.

The ‘Ohana is Forever V Conference’ is presented by the Hawai‘i Court Improvement Pro-ject that aims to provide information, resources and inspiration for youth and professionals about issues facing foster youth and alumni in Hawai‘i. Senior Family Court Judge R. Mark Browning and former foster youth Malia Malufau emceed the event, with special guests: Lina Girl, and John Barkai.

Current and former foster youth attended the following workshops: self advocacy & youth rights: resources for further education, housing, and careers: and communication skills w/ John Barkai.

We’d like to congratulate our alumni members who helped create the various successful youth workshops: Blake Lanoza, Malia Malufau, Noy Worachit, and Judy Adviento. Thank you to Kisha Aguiar, Kauai, & Erin Bunda for helping coordinate as well. A special appreciation to Brianne (16, Kauai) for doing such an exceptionally professional presentation. And a huge mahalo to U-Down, Sindication, & Defend Hawaii for the awesome giveaways.
